Hypnotherapy is a perfectly normal and safe alternative state of consciousness – a deep state of relaxation where you are more susceptible to suggestion allowing you to conform to a change in behavioural habits, phobias or anxieties. It is a psychological experience; it’s neither mysterious nor supernatural. It is a form of therapy which enables you to enlist the help of your conscious and subconscious minds to facilitate positive change and well-being.
Whilst there are many forms of psychological therapy, hypnotherapy is distinctive in that it attempts to access the person’s subconscious mind. In practice, the therapist often (but not exclusively) requires the client to be in a relaxed state and by enlisting the power of the client’s own imagination through using story telling, metaphors or symbolism – hypnotherapy can promote positive change allowing the client to live the life they wish for. The emphasis is goal oriented and allows you to focus your attention internally, reassessing resources and creating new associations, patterns of thinking and behaviour.
Analytical techniques may also be used in an attempt to uncover problems deemed to lie deep and buried in the client’s subconscious mind (this is referred to as the “there and then”) or therapy may concentrate more on a client’s current life and presenting problems (referred to as “the here and now”).
